Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh – A devastating fire broke out on Monday afternoon on the third floor of the Satpura Bhawan building, which houses several government departments in Bhopal. The blaze quickly spread to the top floors and the terrace, causing extensive damage to furniture and documents. Authorities were swift to respond, calling in fire tenders from various agencies, including the Army, Airports Authority of India, and oil companies. However, as the fire continued to rage, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan sought assistance from the Indian Air Force.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), an Indian Air Force plane and a Mi-17 chopper are expected to join the firefighting efforts during the night. The planes will pour water from above in an attempt to control and extinguish the flames. Chief Minister Chouhan personally contacted Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging them to provide support in combating the fire. The Defence Minister assured the Chief Minister that the AN-32 plane and MI-15 helicopter would be dispatched to Bhopal.
Fortunately, no casualties have been reported thus far, as the fire erupted outside of working hours. However, the fire has caused significant destruction, consuming furniture and important documents from various departments housed within the building. The fire’s intensity and heavy smoke have made it challenging for firefighters to enter the premises, hampering their efforts to bring the blaze under control.
Preliminary information suggests that the fire originated on the third floor due to a short circuit in an air conditioner and rapidly spread to other floors due to the wind. The fire’s visibility is extensive, with the flames visible from various parts of the city. The affected Satpura Bhawan building is situated on a hill facing the state government secretariat Vallabh Bhawan.
To investigate the cause of the fire and prevent similar incidents in the future, the state government has formed a committee comprising senior bureaucrats. The committee, which includes officials from the Home Department, Urban Administration, Public Works Department, and the Fire Department, will conduct a thorough inquiry into the incident.
District collector Ashish Singh stated that all available resources have been mobilized to combat the fire. Currently, approximately 22 fire tenders and 30-40 water tankers are engaged in the firefighting operation. However, the density of the fire and the large quantity of files stored in the building have made the task challenging.
As the situation continues to unfold, the collective efforts of the local administration, fire department, and now the Indian Air Force are focused on bringing the inferno under control. The priority remains the safety of all individuals and minimizing further damage to the government building. Authorities are hopeful that the additional assistance from the Indian Air Force will prove instrumental in dousing the flames and preventing further devastation.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of robust fire safety measures and regular maintenance to prevent such accidents. The authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation to ascertain the extent of the damage, the cause of the fire, and the necessary steps to avoid such incidents in the future.
