Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball was ruled out of Sunday night’s game against the Orlando Magic after suffering a right ankle strain in the second quarter. The 2021 NBA Rookie of the Year landed awkwardly after driving to the hoop against Magic forward Paolo Banchero with 8:07 left in the first half. He was helped off the court and did not return.
Ball had seven points, two assists, and one rebound on 3-for-6 shooting before exiting the game. The Hornets went on to lose the game to the Magic, 130-117.
“We’ll have to see what the extent of the injury is,” Hornets coach Steve Clifford said after the game. “But it’s a big loss for us. He’s our best player.”
The latest injury is a blow to Ball, who has been one of the Hornets’ best players this season. He is averaging 25.9 points, 8.6 assists, and 5.8 rebounds per game.
The Hornets have not disclosed the severity of the injury or how much time Ball could miss. However, the timing of the injury is not ideal, as the Hornets are in the midst of a playoff push. They are currently the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference.
Impact of LaMelo Ball’s Injury
Ball’s injury is a significant loss for the Hornets. He is their most dynamic playmaker and scorer. Without him, the Hornets will have to find a way to replace his production.
The Hornets have a number of options to replace Ball in the starting lineup. Dennis Smith Jr., Terry Rozier, and James Bouknight are all capable of handling the ball-handling duties.
However, none of those players are as talented as Ball. He is a special player who can make his teammates better.
The Hornets will need to find a way to compensate for Ball’s absence if they want to make a playoff run.
