Introduction: The northeastern state of Manipur has been engulfed in interethnic violence, resulting in numerous casualties and displacing tens of thousands of people. The unrest was triggered by a court verdict and has led to clashes between the Kuki tribal group and the majority Meitei community. The situation prompted Union Home Minister Amit Shah to appeal for peace and announce his upcoming visit to Manipur to engage with both communities.
Escalating Violence and Displacement: In the wake of the recent explosion of interethnic violence, at least 70 people have lost their lives, and tens of thousands have been displaced. Fresh violence erupted, resulting in one person being shot dead and several houses being set on fire. The Kuki tribal group expressed discontent over the potential allocation of guaranteed quotas for government jobs and other benefits to the Meitei community through affirmative action. There were concerns among the Kuki that this move could also allow the Meitei to acquire land in areas currently designated for tribal groups.
Government Response and Security Measures: To restore peace and maintain law and order, the military has deployed thousands of troops across Manipur. Curfews have been imposed, and internet services have been suspended for several weeks. In response to the recent violence, an indefinite curfew was reimposed in the Bishnupur district after suspected militants attacked a group of people, resulting in one fatality. The militants also targeted abandoned houses near a relief camp established for the displaced.
Long-standing Unrest in Northeast India: Manipur’s current turmoil is rooted in the longstanding unrest that has characterized India’s northeast. Various ethnic and separatist groups have been advocating for greater autonomy or secession from India. Over the years, the Indian government has engaged in negotiations with many of these groups, resulting in agreements that grant them increased powers.
Call for Peace and Reconciliation: Union Home Minister Amit Shah, recognizing the gravity of the situation, has appealed to both communities involved in the violence to maintain peace. He expressed his intention to personally visit Manipur and engage with the people for three days in order to facilitate dialogue and work towards establishing lasting peace. The government’s commitment to justice for all parties involved in the clashes has been emphasized, offering hope for resolution and reconciliation in Manipur.
