Congress backs same sex marriages as supreme court judgement is awaited
Congress backs same sex marriages

In a significant show of support for the LGBTQIA+ community, the Congress party in India has embraced Pride Month, standing for love, equality, and acceptance. This declaration comes at a crucial time as the nation eagerly awaits the Supreme Court’s verdict on legal recognition of same-sex marriages. The Congress’ tweet, which featured the iconic rainbow flag symbolizing LGBTQIA+ pride, contrasts sharply with the opposing stance taken by the poll-bound state of Rajasthan.

The Congress party took to Twitter on Thursday to express its solidarity with Pride Month, voicing its commitment to celebrating and supporting love, equality, and acceptance. Their message carries weight as it coincides with the Supreme Court’s pending decision on a set of petitions seeking legal recognition for non-heterosexual marriages. This move by the Congress is especially noteworthy as it contradicts the stance of its own government in Rajasthan, which recently conveyed its opposition to the aforementioned petitions.

It is important to highlight that Rajasthan, along with another Congress-ruled state, Chhattisgarh, is scheduled to hold elections later this year. With the Congress party keen on maintaining the momentum gained from its recent victory in Karnataka, these states’ opinions on same-sex marriage will undoubtedly influence the party’s position on this crucial social issue.

Pride Month holds a special significance in India, as it commemorates the ongoing struggle for equality for the LGBTQIA+ community. The vibrant Pride parades, the ubiquitous display of rainbow-colored flags, and the lively presence of people dressed in vibrant attire have become emblematic of the global movement for LGBTQIA+ rights. The first Pride Parade in India was held in Kolkata in 1999, and since then, the movement has grown exponentially.

In 2018, a landmark judgment by the Supreme Court decriminalized homosexuality in India, providing a ray of hope for LGBTQIA+ individuals across the country. However, the current BJP-led government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has rejected the demand for the legalization of same-sex marriage. The government has dismissed it as an idea limited to urban elites that could disrupt societal norms. Instead, they have suggested leaving the decision on legal validation of same-sex unions to the Parliament.

The Supreme Court, after an extensive ten-day hearing, has reserved its verdict on the 18 petitions filed by LGBTQIA+ couples seeking legal status for same-sex marriage. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing summer vacation, the court has not provided an estimated timeline for delivering its verdict. It is expected that the judgment will be announced after the break, which lasts until June 30.

If the Supreme Court rules in favor of the petitioners, India would become the first country in South Asia to legalize same-sex marriage, marking a historic milestone in the fight for LGBTQIA+ rights. Such a decision would have far-reaching implications, offering hope and inspiration to LGBTQIA+ communities in neighboring countries as well.

As the nation awaits the Supreme Court’s verdict, the support extended by the Congress party during Pride Month sends a powerful message of inclusivity and equality. The outcome of the court’s decision will shape the future of LGBTQIA+ rights in India and potentially pave the way for broader social changes across the region.
