In a significant development, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited to participate in the outreach sessions of the G7 Summit in Hiroshima, Japan, taking place from May 19 to May 21. Japan’s ambassador, Hiroshi Suzuki, believes that PM Modi’s presence at the summit will strengthen collaboration between the G7 and G20 processes, particularly in addressing the concerns of the Global South.
India is one of eight countries invited to the outreach sessions, and Ambassador Suzuki expressed his confidence in PM Modi’s ability to speak on behalf of developing nations. This is due to Modi’s participation in the Voice of Global South Summit in January, where he had the opportunity to listen to the concerns of over 100 developing countries. Suzuki emphasized that Modi’s presence would lend legitimacy to his vision for the developing world.
Suzuki stated in an interview, “We would be very grateful if Prime Minister Modi can share his vision of how he is going to set the G20 agenda based on the outcome of the G7 Summit because that way we can have more synergy.” He further highlighted that close coordination between the G20 and G7 was crucial in creating unity in an increasingly polarized world. This unity would be instrumental in addressing the challenges faced by developing countries, including rising food and energy prices, energy security, climate change, sustainable development, and health.
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the critical importance of cooperation between the G20 and G7. Kishida believes that forging unity is necessary to tackle the global challenges faced by developing nations. By working together, the G20 and G7 can effectively address issues such as rising food and energy prices, energy security, climate change, sustainable development, and health.
