Chennai, May 10, 2023: The Tamil Nadu government has filed defamation charges against K Annamalai, the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), over his derogatory statements against the Chief Minister on corruption.

According to sources, Annamalai had made some remarks against the Chief Minister in a public rally on Sunday, accusing him of corruption and nepotism. He had also allegedly used derogatory language while referring to the Chief Minister.

Taking strong exception to Annamalai’s statements, the Tamil Nadu government has filed a defamation suit against him in a local court. The Chief Minister’s office has said that the remarks made by the BJP leader were baseless and false and had the potential to damage the reputation of the Chief Minister and his government.

THE DMK FILES

This year in April Annamalai released papers called the DMK files which included several members of the DMK including Stalin accusing them of taking bribes from an Indo-European shell company for the Chennai metro project.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Chief Minister’s office said that the government will not tolerate baseless allegations and will take legal action against those who try to tarnish the image of the government and its officials. The statement also called upon political parties to refrain from making derogatory statements against the Chief Minister and his government.

The BJP, on the other hand, has defended Annamalai’s remarks, saying that he was only stating the facts. The party has accused the Tamil Nadu government of trying to stifle the voice of the opposition and using the legal system to intimidate political opponents.

This is not the first time that the Tamil Nadu government has taken legal action against political opponents. Earlier this year, the government had filed defamation charges against several opposition leaders over their remarks on the government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The incident has once again highlighted the tense relationship between the ruling party and the opposition in Tamil Nadu. With the state assembly elections due in 2024, the political temperature in the state is likely to rise further in the coming months.
