Greater Noida, May 19, 2023 – A horrifying incident unfolded on the campus of Shiv Nadar University in Greater Noida, as a male student allegedly shot and killed his female classmate before turning the gun on himself. The victims have been identified as Sneha Chaurasia, a 21-year-old student from Kanpur, and a male student, whose name has not been disclosed. Both were third-year students pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology.

The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon outside the dining hall on the university campus. Administrative officials immediately alerted the police after witnessing the distressing event. Sneha Chaurasia was rushed to Yatharth Hospital in Greater Noida, but sadly, she has declared brought dead upon arrival. The male student proceeded to the boys’ hostel, where he tragically shot himself in the head. Authorities discovered a country-made pistol at the scene.

Deputy Commissioner of Police SM Khan stated, “Preliminary investigations suggest that both students were in a long-term relationship that recently turned sour.” While the exact motive behind this gruesome act is still under investigation, it is believed that the deteriorating relationship between the two may have played a significant role.

The families of the deceased have been informed, and the bodies have been sent for a post-mortem examination to gather further evidence and ascertain the sequence of events. The university is currently on summer break, with most students having gone home. However, Sneha Chaurasia and the male student had obtained special permission to stay on campus during the break.

According to a police investigator, CCTV footage captured the incident, despite the dining hall being locked. The video revealed that the two students met outside the hall around 1 pm. They were seen embracing and engaging in conversation. The male student appeared to have brought a parcel, presumably a gift, which Sneha Chaurasia rejected. In response to her refusal, he shot her in the abdomen. Despite being injured, Sneha Chaurasia valiantly fought back, but the male student shot her once again, causing her to collapse. He then fled toward the boys’ hostel.

The police are currently focused on determining the source of the firearm and how the male student managed to bring it onto the campus. The investigation is ongoing, and further details will be revealed in due course.

Expressing deep sorrow, a spokesperson from Shiv Nadar University stated, “We are deeply saddened and pained at the unfortunate loss of lives of two students of the university today. The matter is currently under investigation by the authorities, and we are closely monitoring the situation. Our utmost priority is the safety and well-being of our students, employees, and the entire community. We are fully cooperating with the authorities in their investigation. Our deep and heartfelt condolences go out to the affected families, and we are supporting them in every way possible at this difficult time.”

This shocking incident has shaken the Shiv Nadar University community and serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and support systems within educational institutions. It also raises questions about campus security and the need for stricter measures to prevent such tragic events from occurring in the future.
