Police Investigate Brutal Attack on Food Delivery Personnel

Bengaluru, May 18, 2023 – A 29-year-old Swiggy delivery executive was brutally attacked and stabbed by three individuals on the evening of May 12, following a dispute over payment. Nayon Mia, a resident of Pragathinagar near Electronics City, is currently receiving treatment for his injuries as police authorities intensify efforts to identify and apprehend the assailants.

Nayon Mia, an employee of the popular online food delivery platform, Swiggy, was assigned to deliver a food order from Biriyani Zone to a customer in Pragathinagar. Arriving at the designated location, situated on the service road of Hosur Road near a Ganesha temple, Nayon encountered three individuals standing on the roadside who claimed to have placed the order. Trusting their statement, Nayon handed over the food parcel to the trio.

As the payment mode for the order was set as “cash on delivery,” Nayon requested the men to pay the amount due, which totaled Rs 560. Unfortunately, the trio refused to cooperate and began hurling abuses at Nayon, asserting that they did not possess the cash necessary for the payment. Sensing the gravity of the situation, Nayon implored them, explaining that if they failed to make the payment, it would be deducted from his salary.

Despite Nayon’s pleas, the trio remained adamant and persisted in their refusal to pay. Frustrated by their defiance, Nayon stood his ground, insisting that he would not leave without receiving the rightful payment. It was at this point that the situation took a violent turn.

Enraged by Nayon’s persistence, one of the assailants drew a knife from his pocket and attacked Nayon, stabbing him in the stomach before fleeing the scene. Grievously injured and losing blood rapidly, Nayon managed to contact a friend who promptly rushed him to the hospital for urgent medical attention.

The incident was reported to the police, who have registered a case against the unidentified attackers at the Electronics City police station. Law enforcement authorities are currently examining CCTV footage from the vicinity in an attempt to identify and track down the perpetrators.

The incident has raised concerns over the safety and security of delivery personnel working in the gig economy. Food delivery executives often face various challenges, including payment disputes and confrontations with customers. Such incidents highlight the need for increased awareness and measures to safeguard the rights and well-being of these essential workers.

Swiggy, in response to the incident, expressed their deep concern and condemned the act of violence against Nayon. The company assured that they are fully cooperating with the police investigation and are committed to supporting Nayon during his recovery.

As Nayon continues to receive medical treatment, the local community has come together to condemn the attack and demand justice for the delivery executive. It is hoped that the swift identification and apprehension of the assailants will not only provide closure to Nayon but also serve as a deterrent against future acts of violence in the city.

In the wake of this distressing incident, the safety of delivery personnel and the need for stricter security measures within the gig economy remain crucial points of discussion, emphasizing the urgent need for concerted efforts from all stakeholders to ensure the well-being of those working in the industry.
