Introduction
The recent inauguration of the Kuvempu Airport in Shivamogga, Karnataka, marked a significant milestone in the state’s aviation infrastructure. However, the joyous occasion was marred by a language controversy as netizens questioned the use of Hindi in airport announcements.
As the first commercial domestic flight touched down at Kuvempu Airport from Bengaluru on Wednesday afternoon, a portion of the online community expressed their discontent with announcements being made in Hindi. Karnataka’s primary languages are Kannada and English, and the choice to include Hindi in official communications sparked a debate.
One concerned citizen, Rupesh Ranjanna, took to social media to voice his opinion. Sharing a picture of a digital notice board from Shivamogga Airport, he remarked, “This is not some Hindi state, this is Karnataka. Hindi is not required here. Remove this and put it in Kannada. Hindi imposition at Shivamogga airport, which will be operated by the Karnataka government from tomorrow.”
MB Patil replies
In response to the outcry, Karnataka Industries and Commerce minister MB Patil addressed the issue. He reassured the public that only Kannada and English would be prioritized in airport announcements. In a tweet, he stated, “This has not come to my notice, I will definitely discuss with concerned officials! Kannada and English will be prioritized.” The minister’s statement sought to allay concerns about linguistic preference.
The Shivamogga airport, also known as Kuvempu Airport, will be operated by the Karnataka state government. On the day of its inaugural commercial flight, several prominent leaders, including former Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa and state minister for industries MB Patil, were seen aboard the aircraft. The flight services, operated by Indigo Airlines, will be available daily, connecting Shivamogga and Bengaluru.
Kuvempu Airport in Shivamogga now stands as the ninth domestic airport in Karnataka, adding to the state’s growing aviation network. Karnataka already boasts domestic airports in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Ballari, Bidar, Hubballi, Kalaburagi, Belagavi, and Mangaluru, with Bengaluru and Mangaluru airports being designated as international gateways.
Conclusion
While the inauguration of Kuvempu Airport promises enhanced connectivity and convenience for travelers in the region, the language debate highlights the significance of linguistic diversity and local cultural sensitivities in public spaces like airports. The assurance from the state government that Kannada and English will take precedence in announcements aims to strike a balance between linguistic inclusivity and regional identity.
