Delhi Police has implemented Section 144 in North-east Delhi as a precautionary measure to prevent any potential riot-like situations ahead of the upcoming G20 events. This decision comes amidst concerns of breach of peace arising from sudden large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations that could potentially escalate and affect the North-East District. The order aims to maintain tranquility during the various events and meetings leading up to the G20 Summit in September, to be held in New Delhi.
According to an official notice released by the authorities, the police will closely monitor all public places for speeches, gestures, slogans, posters, placards, or banners that could potentially incite criminal hatred between communities or hurt religious sentiments. The enforcement of Section 144 enables law enforcement agencies to take necessary action against anyone contravening this order, with violators being subject to punishment under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code-1860.
A senior police officer, while speaking to ANI, emphasized that the implementation of Section 144 is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety and security of the public. The decision was influenced by past events, particularly the 2020 riots, where rioters were found in possession of dangerous items such as bottles, petrol, bricks, stones, sticks, and rods that were used to fuel the violence. In order to prevent any untoward incidents, the current order prohibits the possession or use of such items.
India, as the host country of the G20 Summit, is currently conducting meetings across the nation as part of its G20 Presidency. These meetings serve as important platforms for deliberations, negotiations, and policy discussions among participating nations, as they work towards addressing global challenges and fostering economic cooperation.
The imposition of Section 144 in North-east Delhi underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful and secure environment during these significant events. It reflects the authorities’ determination to maintain law and order, protect public safety, and prevent any potential disruptions or incidents that could mar the G20 proceedings.
With strict monitoring and restricted movement of items that could be potentially harmful, the Delhi Police aims to uphold the peace and tranquility of the region. The implementation of Section 144 will act as a deterrent against any untoward incidents and provide reassurance to the residents of North-east Delhi and the participants attending the G20 events.
As the G20 Summit draws closer, the Indian government will continue to take necessary measures to ensure the smooth conduct of the events and meetings leading up to the summit. The enforcement of Section 144 is just one such step in this direction, demonstrating the authorities’ commitment to upholding security and maintaining a conducive atmosphere for fruitful discussions and collaborations among the G20 member nations.
