Yoga Guru calls for action against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh as top wrestlers stage sit-in protest

In a recent development, renowned yoga guru Ramdev has extended his support to India’s top wrestlers who have been protesting at Jantar Mantar for several weeks. The wrestlers are demanding the arrest of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and a BJP MP, over allegations of sexual harassment raised by seven women wrestlers, including a minor. Ramdev has strongly condemned the accused and called for immediate legal action against him.

Expressing his concern, Ramdev stated, “It is a very shameful thing that the country’s wrestlers are sitting at Jantar Mantar and accusing the president of the wrestling federation of sexual misconduct. Such a person should be immediately arrested and sent behind bars.” He further criticized Singh for his derogatory remarks towards women and emphasized the need to address this condemnable act.

Ramdev’s support has bolstered the ongoing sit-in protest by prominent wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, and Sakshi Malik, who have been demanding Singh’s arrest since April 23. The wrestlers have voiced their grievances against the WFI president, alleging sexual harassment and impropriety. Their collective effort has drawn significant attention to the issue and led to the filing of two FIRs by the Delhi Police against Singh.

The first FIR pertains to the allegations made by the minor wrestler and has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, emphasizing the seriousness of the offense. The second FIR focuses on the charges of outraging modesty. However, despite the filing of these complaints, Singh has not yet been arrested, prompting questions about the delay in legal action.

Responding to queries regarding Singh’s absence behind bars, Ramdev clarified that he can only voice his opinion and is unable to personally ensure the arrest. He reaffirmed his political stance and asserted his capability to address questions regarding the matter, while urging for swift action to be taken against the accused.

Singh, on the other hand, has claimed that the law is being misused and expressed his intent to rally support for change under the guidance of spiritual leaders. However, his remarks have been met with strong opposition from the wrestling community and supporters, who insist on a thorough investigation and legal proceedings.

The involvement of prominent figures like Ramdev has added momentum to the movement against sexual harassment in sports and has placed pressure on authorities to act promptly. The growing support for the wrestlers’ cause demonstrates a collective demand for justice and serves as a reminder that no individual, regardless of their position, is above the law.

As the sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar continues, the wrestling community and its supporters remain steadfast in their pursuit of justice, hoping to secure a safe and respectful environment for athletes and prevent further instances of harassment. The case has highlighted the importance of addressing such allegations promptly and effectively, ensuring the protection and well-being of athletes, especially women, in the realm of sports.
