In a recent development, renowned yoga guru Ramdev has extended his support to India’s top wrestlers who have been protesting at Jantar Mantar for several weeks. The wrestlers are demanding the arrest of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and a BJP MP, over allegations of sexual harassment raised by seven women wrestlers, including a minor. Ramdev has strongly condemned the accused and called for immediate legal action against him.
Expressing his concern, Ramdev stated, “It is a very shameful thing that the country’s wrestlers are sitting at Jantar Mantar and accusing the president of the wrestling federation of sexual misconduct. Such a person should be immediately arrested and sent behind bars.” He further criticized Singh for his derogatory remarks towards women and emphasized the need to address this condemnable act.
Ramdev’s support has bolstered the ongoing sit-in protest by prominent wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, and Sakshi Malik, who have been demanding Singh’s arrest since April 23. The wrestlers have voiced their grievances against the WFI president, alleging sexual harassment and impropriety. Responding to queries regarding Singh’s absence behind bars, Ramdev clarified that he can only voice his opinion and is unable to personally ensure the arrest. He reaffirmed his political stance and asserted his capability to address questions regarding the matter, while urging for swift action to be taken against the accused.
Singh, on the other hand, has claimed that the law is being misused and expressed his intent to rally support for change under the guidance of spiritual leaders.
