Palakkad, a city in Kerala, paid musical tributes to three Carnatic music legends—Palghat Mani Iyer, M.D. Ramanathan, and K.V. Narayanaswamy. On the occasion of Palghat Mani Iyer’s 111th birth anniversary, 20 esteemed mridangam artists gathered at the Viswanathaswamy Temple in Kalpathy to offer floral and musical tributes to the renowned mridangam maestro. T.R. Rajamani, Mani Iyer’s eldest son and a prominent mridangam artist himself, guided the performers during the ceremony. The annual tribute had been paused for a few years but was resumed this year.
Simultaneously, the Palghat Fine Arts Society organized an audio-visual show in Tharekkad to celebrate the birth centenary of legendary vocalists M.D. Ramanathan and K.V. Narayanaswamy. The event showcased their remarkable contributions to Carnatic music and included light-hearted moments from their public lives. All three artists were highly regarded and had performed together across the country, captivating audiences with their talent.
The musical tributes paid in Palakkad exemplify the city’s rich cultural heritage and its reverence for Carnatic music. By commemorating these Carnatic legends, the community not only honors their individual legacies but also promotes and preserves the traditions of this classical art form.
