Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir has announced that May 25 will be observed as “Pakistan Martyrs Day” in response to the recent attacks on military installations, which he deemed “intolerable.” The announcement was made during a ceremony held at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, where slain soldiers were honored.

In a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), General Munir expressed his deep grief over the attacks on military installations and memorials that took place on May 9. The violence erupted following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan by paramilitary Rangers in Islamabad, which led to widespread protests by his party workers.

During the protests, a dozen military installations, including the Lahore Corps Commander house, Mianwali airbase, and the ISI building in Faisalabad, were vandalized by the mob. The Army headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi was also targeted for the first time. The clashes between security personnel and protesters resulted in a death toll of 10 according to the police, while Khan’s party claimed that 40 of its workers lost their lives in the firing.

The Army Chief condemned these actions as “intolerable” and described the incidents as a “dark day” in the country’s history. He emphasized the importance of the army in guaranteeing the security and unity of Pakistan, stating that the institution always remembers and values every individual associated with it and their families. General Munir highlighted the strong bond within the army, referring to it as a proud and exemplary family.

The ceremony at the General Headquarters was attended by numerous senior military officers and the families of the slain soldiers. General Munir presented military medals during the event, with 51 kin of the fallen soldiers receiving Sitara-e-Imtiaz (military) and 22 officers and jawans being awarded Tamgha-e-Basalat. Additionally, two officers were honored with the United Nations Special Medal.

By observing “Pakistan Martyrs Day” on May 25, the country aims to pay tribute to the courageous soldiers who made great sacrifices in the line of duty. It serves as a reminder of the army’s dedication to protecting the nation’s security and unity. The declaration of this day highlights the significance of commemorating the martyrs’ contributions and the army’s commitment to honoring its fallen heroes.
