In a significant ceremony preceding the inauguration of the new Parliament building, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was presented with the revered sceptre known as ‘Sengol’ by Adheenam priests. The occasion garnered attention as popular Tamil actor Rajinikanth expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister for the government’s decision to install the Sengol in the new parliamentary edifice, citing its importance in making Tamilians proud.
The Tamil superstar took to Twitter, stating, “The traditional symbol of Tamil power – the sceptre – will shine in India’s new parliament building. My sincere thanks to the honorable Prime Minister @narendramodi who made Tamilians proud.” Rajinikanth’s tweet resonated with sentiments of cultural significance and appreciation for the recognition of Tamil heritage.
The Sengol, a five-feet long sceptre made of silver and gold, holds historical significance in the Tamil kingdoms of the past. It was originally presented by Lord Mountbatten to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on August 14, 1947, symbolizing the transfer of power. However, the government’s version of its history has been challenged by the Congress party as “bogus.” The Sengol, crafted by renowned Madras jewellers Vummidi Bangaru Chetty, had been on display at The Allahabad Museum.
During the meeting between Prime Minister Modi and the Adheenam priests at his official residence, the Prime Minister expressed his delight at the inclusion of the Sengol in the new Parliament building. Modi emphasized the significance of the Sengol, stating, “This Sengol will keep reminding us that we have to walk on the path of duty and remain answerable to the public.” He acknowledged the Sengol as a symbol of India’s rich traditions and stressed the importance of accountability in public service.
Modi further acknowledged the historical significance of the Sengol, remarking, “It would have been good if the holy Sengol would have been given its due respect after independence and given an honorable position. But this Sengol was kept on display as a walking stick in Anand Bhawan, Prayagraj. Your ‘sevak’ and our Govt have brought the Sengol out of Anand Bhawan.”
In a grand ceremony scheduled for Sunday, the Sengol will be ceremoniously installed near the Speaker’s seat in the new Parliament building. The event will mark the official inauguration of the Parliament, and Prime Minister Modi will preside over the proceedings.
The installation of the Sengol in the new Parliament building signifies the government’s commitment to honoring and preserving the cultural heritage of Tamil Nadu. It serves as a testament to the importance of recognizing and celebrating the diverse traditions that contribute to India’s rich tapestry of history and culture.
As the nation eagerly awaits the inauguration of the new Parliament building, the inclusion of the Sengol symbolizes the unity of India’s varied cultural legacies and emphasizes the responsibility of its leaders to remain dedicated to the welfare and aspirations of the public they serve.
