Introduction
In a significant development for the Congress party, more than 20 leaders from Jammu and Kashmir have returned to its fold, marking a notable reshuffle in the region’s political landscape. The return of these leaders comes in the wake of former Congress veteran Ghulam Nabi Azad’s recent statement on Article 370, which triggered a series of events leading to their rejoining.

All the returning leaders
The leaders have been welcomed back into the Congress party . The Party chief Mallikarjun Kharge during a gathering that showcased the party’s commitment to unity and consolidation. The event saw the presence of several key figures, including Congress president Kharge, AICC general secretary in-charge organization K C Venugopal, AICC in-charge of the state Rajani Patil, and Jammu and Kashmir Congress chief Vikar Rasool Wani.
Among the returning leaders, Yashpal Kundal stood out as an ex-Minister, a two-time legislator from the Panthers Party, and the Chief of the SC/ST and OBC Department of AAP in Jammu and Kashmir. Haji Abdul Rashid Dar, a former vice president of JKPCC who had previously joined Azad’s party, also made his way back to the Congress fold.
Congress Criticises Ghulam Nabi Azad’s Remark
The move to rejoin Congress was not without controversy. The Opposition party took the opportunity to criticize Ghulam Nabi Azad for his remarks on Article 370. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh stated, “Mr. GNA himself gives new evidence of his DNA mutation by saying ‘those opposing Article 370 abrogation ignorant of the situation on the ground’.” Ramesh highlighted Azad’s previous stance against the abrogation in the Rajya Sabha in August 2019, while also questioning the motive behind his extended stay in a government bungalow.
The returning leaders, who were previously associated with Ghulam Nabi Azad’s Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) and other outfits like the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Apni Party, expressed their confidence in the Congress’s vision and leadership. Names such as Naresh K Gupta, Sham Lal Bhagat, Namrata Sharma, Saima Jan, and others were among those who officially rejoined the Congress on this occasion.
It’s worth noting that several leaders who had left the Congress earlier to join Ghulam Nabi Azad’s party had since returned to the Congress fold. This wave of rejoining seems to be a testament to the party’s ability to maintain its appeal and bring together diverse voices under its banner.
Conclusion
As the political landscape in Jammu and Kashmir continues to evolve, the Congress party’s efforts to strengthen its position by reuniting with former members and leaders reflect a dynamic shift in the region’s politics. This move not only rekindles past connections but also sets the stage for potential future collaborations and strategies.
