New Delhi, July 29, 2023 – In a significant move to shed its colonial past, the Indian Navy has taken the decision to abolish the practice of carrying batons by all its personnel with immediate effect. The move comes in line with the government’s directive to remove symbols of colonial authority from the country’s institutions.
The communication issued by the Indian Navy emphasized that the practice of carrying batons, once seen as a symbol of authority and power, had become a norm over time. However, in a transformed navy of the Amrit Kaal (a term denoting the modern era), the symbolism of the baton was deemed out of place.
In light of this, the Navy has directed the discontinuation of carrying batons by all its personnel, including the provost, from now on. Instead, a ceremonial baton will be appropriately placed in the office of the head of each unit. The ceremonial handover of the baton may be conducted within the office during a change of command as a symbolic gesture.
This move is part of the Indian Defence forces’ ongoing efforts to shed the legacies of the colonial era. It highlights the Navy’s commitment to embracing its own rich maritime heritage and promoting a more inclusive and modern identity.
Notably, the Indian Navy has made other significant changes to reflect its cultural identity and history. Last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the new ensign, or ‘Nishaan,’ of the Indian Navy. The redesigned emblem draws inspiration from the seal of Chhatrapati Shivaji, a prominent historical figure known for his maritime prowess.
The new ‘Nishaan’ serves as a powerful symbol that removes the remnants of the colonial past from the Navy’s identity and proudly represents the country’s indigenous maritime heritage.
The Indian Navy’s decision to abandon the practice of carrying batons represents a progressive step towards dismantling the vestiges of colonialism and embracing a more inclusive and culturally resonant identity. It underlines the Navy’s commitment to fostering a modern and diverse organization that draws strength from its own history and heritage.
