India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced the opening of a consulate in Brisbane to fulfill the longstanding demand of the Indian diaspora. The announcement was made during a packed event at the Qudos Bank Arena, with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also in attendance.

At present, India has three consulates in Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth, while Brisbane is home to an Honorary Consulate of India. The decision to open a consulate in Brisbane is a significant step in addressing the needs and aspirations of the Indian community in the region. With over 21,000 people from across Australia attending the event, Modi expressed his delight in connecting with the Indian diaspora and acknowledged their role in advancing bilateral ties between India and Australia.

Modi highlighted that the foundation of the strong relationship between the two nations lies in mutual trust and respect, with the Indian diaspora playing a vital role in fostering these ties. He reminisced about the evolution of the India-Australia relationship, starting with the “3Cs” – Commonwealth, Cricket, and Curry. It then moved to the “3Ds” – Democracy, Diaspora, and Dosti (meaning friendship in Hindi). Eventually, the focus shifted to the “3Es” – Energy, Economy, and Education. However, Modi emphasized that the true depth of the relationship surpasses these categorizations.

Prime Minister Albanese also addressed the gathering, praising the Indian community for their contributions in making Australia stronger. He expressed his desire for the relationship between India and Australia to continue growing, particularly in the realms of business and education. Albanese emphasized the importance of fostering more connections between the two countries, encouraging increased student exchanges and collaborations among business leaders, artists, and families.

The decision to establish a consulate in Brisbane reflects India’s commitment to meeting the demands and aspirations of the Indian diaspora and further strengthening the bonds between the two nations. It will provide the community in Brisbane with enhanced consular services, fostering closer engagement and support for their needs.

Overall, the announcement of a consulate in Brisbane is a significant development for the Indian diaspora in Australia. It signifies India’s recognition of their contributions and the government’s commitment to addressing their needs. This move will not only provide easier access to consular services but also strengthen the bilateral ties and cultural exchange between India and Australia. The consulate will serve as a hub for fostering greater collaboration in various sectors and will contribute to the overall growth and prosperity of both nations.
