Delhi experienced heavy rain and gusty winds, bringing relief from a recent heatwave, but causing disruptions in the city. Flights were impacted, and trees were uprooted due to the downpour.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a thunderstorm forecast for Delhi and nearby areas, including Noida and Ghaziabad. They predicted rain until Tuesday and informed the public about the expected impact of the thunderstorm.
According to the IMD, a cluster of cloud patches was passing through Delhi-NCR, leading to a thunderstorm, duststorm, light to moderate rain, and gusty winds of 40-70 km/h. They advised people to take precautions to avoid traffic jams and any untoward incidents.
Flight operations at Delhi Airport were affected, and passengers were advised to contact their airlines for updated information. Due to the bad weather, four incoming flights were diverted to Jaipur.
The recent heatwave pushed the mercury above 45 degrees Celsius in Delhi, resulting in high power demand. However, the weather department forecasts that the scorching heat will subside at least until the following Tuesday.
Earlier this month, the weather office predicted below-normal maximum temperatures in May for northwest India. They anticipate a normal monsoon rainfall this year, although there might be a slight delay in its arrival.
