The government, in a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has made a significant decision to increase the minimum support prices (MSP) for all mandated kharif crops in the marketing season of 2023-24. This move aims to support farmers and ensure their economic well-being.

Piyush Goyal, the Food Minister, provided details about the revised MSP rates for various crops. The MSP for paddy (common) has been set at Rs 2,183 per quintal, marking a 7% increase from the previous season’s rate of Rs 2,040 per quintal. Additionally, the MSP for paddy (A grade) has been fixed at Rs 2,203 per quintal, higher than the figure of Rs 2,060 per quintal from the previous year.

In line with the government’s objective of promoting crop diversification, the MSP for moong has been raised to Rs 8,558 per quintal, representing an increase of Rs 803 compared to the previous rate of Rs 7,755 per quintal.

The government’s decision to raise the MSP for kharif crops in the marketing season of 2023-24 aims to ensure that farmers receive remunerative prices for their produce. It also serves as an incentive for farmers to explore crop diversification, which can contribute to sustainable agriculture practices and reduce dependency on specific crops.

By providing higher MSPs, the government aims to enhance the income and livelihoods of farmers and encourage them to adopt alternative cropping patterns. These measures contribute to the overall growth and stability of the agricultural sector in the country.
