Manipur, India – The state of Manipur has been plunged into further turmoil as violence erupted once again, resulting in the loss of a man’s life, injuries to two others, and the destruction of several homes. In response to these disturbing incidents, district authorities have revoked the curfew relaxation in three districts, intensifying security measures in the region.
The tragic events unfolded on Wednesday, when a 29-year-old man, identified as Toijam Chandramani, was fatally shot by members of a different community in Bishnupur district. In a separate incident within the same district, two individuals sustained injuries. The targeted violence has prompted authorities to cancel the curfew relaxation that had been in effect from 5 am to 4 pm.
According to police reports, armed youths raided villages in Bishnupur district’s Moirang area. As the inhabitants of a relief camp emerged to investigate the commotion, Toijam Chandramani was struck by a bullet. Despite being rushed to a hospital in critical condition, Chandramani succumbed to his injuries.
Tragically, Chandramani’s death escalated tensions in the area, leading to additional deployments of paramilitary and police personnel to restore order. The situation further deteriorated when three houses in Bishnupur’s Phoubakchao were set ablaze on Tuesday night. In retaliation, youths from another community burned down four houses, fueling an ongoing cycle of violence and destruction.
Since May 3, Manipur has been grappling with a wave of ethnic violence, affecting 11 out of 16 districts in the state. In response, an indefinite curfew was imposed, internet services were suspended, and sporadic incidents of violence have been reported almost daily. The gravity of the situation has prompted the deployment of Army, Assam Rifles, and Territorial Army units in 23 of the most volatile and sensitive police station areas across 11 districts.
The death toll has reached a distressing figure of 71, with an additional 300 people injured, including police personnel. Furthermore, nearly 1,700 houses have been razed to the ground, and over 200 vehicles have been destroyed during the course of the violence. The devastating impact on lives and property highlights the urgent need for swift and decisive action to restore peace and harmony in the region.
In light of the escalating violence, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, who also holds the Home portfolio, has appealed for additional companies of central forces to be deployed to effectively address the recurring bouts of violence that persist in certain areas.
The government’s primary focus remains the restoration of peace, the protection of lives and property, and the promotion of communal harmony in Manipur. As authorities grapple with this challenging situation, the residents of Manipur yearn for a swift resolution that will bring an end to the cycle of violence, allowing the state to heal and rebuild.
