Farewell to an Icon: Chennai’s Crowne Plaza Hotel to Closed Down

In a somber turn of events, Crowne Plaza Chennai Adyar Park is set to close its doors this December 20, 2023 marking the end of an era in the city’s hospitality landscape. The decision to shut down the iconic establishment comes as a surprise to many, leaving patrons and locals reflecting on the memories forged within its walls.

The hotel announced on the November 21st the end of its 38-year journey to its guests in a message “It is with mixed emotions that we announce the closure of our doors to guest arrivals, effective December 20. This significant update stems from the owning company’s decision to initiate comprehensive rebuilding,” the message said.

The building will be demolished as it will be in a rebuilding phase in the future years. The Crowne Plaza, a fixture in the heart of Chennai, has long been a symbol of luxury and sophistication. Its distinctive architecture and unwavering commitment to impeccable service have made it a favored destination for both business travelers and tourists alike. The news of its impending closure has triggered a wave of nostalgia among those who have cherished moments spent in its elegant rooms and opulent halls.

It is a 287 room plaza, was five star hotel on Chamiers Road. It known as a Holiday Inn. It has gone through many changes as the hotel used to famously known by Park Sheraton or the older moniker Adyar Gate Hotel. But in 2015, the name was again change to Crowne Plaza Chennai Adyar Park.

Opened in 1981, the Crowne Plaza quickly became a landmark, hosting countless events, conferences, and celebrations. Its restaurants, renowned for serving delectable cuisine that reflects the rich flavors of the region, have been a culinary delight for locals and visitors seeking an authentic taste of Chennai.

“For the past 38 years, our iconic hotel and renowned restaurants have been privileged to host numerous guests and events, contributing to a rich legacy. We sincerely appreciate your support and are grateful for your partnerships” said the hotel staff in their message.

While the Crowne Plaza may be closing its doors, the memories created within its walls will endure. From grand celebrations to quiet moments of reprieve, the hotel has been a canvas for countless stories. As we bid adieu to this iconic establishment, let us fondly remember the experiences it provided and the role it played in shaping Chennai’s cultural and social tapestry.
