Introduction

In a tragic incident that unfolded on Sunday morning, at least seven people lost their lives and several others were injured in a powerful explosion at an illegal fireworks factory in the Duttapukur area of West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district. The blast, which occurred around 10:40 am, not only claimed lives but also caused extensive damage to nearby buildings due to its sheer intensity.

Local fire brigade officials reported that the explosion’s impact was so immense that it left a trail of destruction, severely damaging structures in the vicinity. The fireworks factory, concealed within a two-storey house, had been operating illicitly, according to local accounts.

Rathin Ghosh, the state’s food minister and a legislator from the area, revealed that police officials informed him of the tragic toll: seven or eight fatalities, with approximately six individuals sustaining injuries. Ghosh further shared that the factory was illegally stockpiling firecrackers within the building that ultimately experienced the explosion. It’s worth noting that this location was not a designated manufacturing center; the primary hub for firecracker production was situated far away in the Narayanpur area of Nilgunj.

Not The First Time

This incident is unfortunately not an isolated one in West Bengal. The state has experienced multiple similar tragedies in recent times. In May of this year, an explosion at a fireworks factory resulted in nine deaths and seven injuries in Egra, located in the Midnapore district. Among the victims were two women. Another explosion, occurring in a residential area in South 24 Parganas district, claimed the lives of at least three individuals in May.

This pattern of incidents has compelled the state government to take serious action. A new policy has been introduced, aiming to restrict firecracker production to designated industrial hubs. These hubs are being established to ensure safer manufacturing practices and prevent the setting up of illegal operations in residential areas. The intention is to mitigate the risks associated with unregulated fireworks manufacturing, which poses a significant danger to both those involved in production and the surrounding communities.

Conclusion

Efforts are underway to create a safer environment by centralising firecracker production and enforcing stricter regulations. The recent tragedy underscores the urgency of implementing these measures to safeguard lives and prevent further such incidents. The heartrending loss of life in the Duttapukur explosion serves as a somber reminder of the potential consequences when safety is compromised for profit, and highlights the pressing need for comprehensive regulatory changes in the fireworks industry.
