As viral skincare trends continue to gain popularity on social media, experts are urging caution and advising against jumping on the bandwagon without considering the potential harm these trends can have on the skin. Renowned plastic and cosmetic surgeon Dr Anup Dhir, senior consultant at Apollo Hospital, warns that blindly following online beauty advice can lead to detrimental effects.
Some of the harmful DIY skincare trends to avoid include pulling out blackheads with glue and applying chemical peels without professional guidance. Dr Dhir also highlights the dangers of individuals self-injecting botox and fillers without supervision, as well as using readily available lash lift DIY kits that can cause eye damage.

Dermatologist Dr Kiran Sethi took to Instagram to address these harmful trends and urged her followers not to indulge in them. She specifically warns against using deodorants as face primers, as they contain various ingredients besides antiperspirants that can be harmful to the skin. Additionally, Dr Sethi advises against using cryosticks and instead suggests using cold spoons to brighten the eyes. She recommends putting spoons in the freezer for a few minutes, then placing them on the eyes for five minutes.
While some DIY skincare practices can be beneficial, it is crucial to be cautious and seek professional advice before trying any viral trends. Relying on expert guidance rather than blindly following internet advice is essential for maintaining healthy and safe skincare practices.
