Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, a Congress leader, issued a stern warning to police officials, asserting that his government would not allow the “saffronisation” of the police department. During a high-level meeting with top police officers, Shivakumar highlighted incidents that occurred under the previous BJP regime in Karnataka and expressed his determination to prevent any bias in the police force.
Referring to instances where police officers were seen wearing saffron clothes in Mangalore, Bijapur, and Bagalkot, Shivakumar emphasized that such actions would not be tolerated under the Congress government. He urged the officials to work with the national flag, demonstrating respect for the country. The Deputy CM reiterated that his government would not permit the saffronisation of the police department.
Shivakumar drew attention to the involvement of a senior police official with the rank of Additional Director General of Police in the Police Sub-Inspector recruitment scam, criticizing it as an example of the department’s failings. Furthermore, he accused the police of harassing Congress leader Priyank Kharge, who had exposed the scam. Shivakumar expressed his disappointment, stating that the Karnataka Police Department, which had previously enjoyed a good reputation nationwide, had suffered damage to its honor and dignity.
The Congress leader alleged that false cases were filed against Congress leaders and workers, including himself and former CM Siddaramaiah, during the BJP’s rule. He accused the police of biased behavior and highlighted the disparity in filing cases against members of the opposition party. Shivakumar called for a change in the attitude and behavior of police officers, stressing that the new government was expected to bring about significant transformation, starting with the police department itself.
During the same meeting, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah directed the police to remain vigilant against moral policing. He emphasized that irrespective of religious affiliations, no form of moral policing would be tolerated in the state. The Chief Minister’s stance on preventing moral policing aims to promote a tolerant and inclusive society.
As the new Congress government in Karnataka takes charge, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar’s warning to police officials against saffronisation and his call for a change in attitude within the police department have drawn attention. The government’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the police force and preventing biased actions will be closely monitored by the public. Additionally, CM Siddaramaiah’s emphasis on combating moral policing reflects the government’s stance on safeguarding individual freedoms and maintaining social harmony.
