Delhi Court seeks police report of FIR plea on wrestlers protest

New Delhi, May 26, 2023 – The Delhi court has requested an Action Taken Report (ATR) from the Delhi Police regarding a complaint seeking the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against a group of wrestlers who have been protesting at Jantar Mantar. The wrestlers are accused of leveling false allegations against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the President of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). The court, presided over by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Anamika, has directed the police to submit their report by June 9, which will be followed by further hearings on the matter.

The application seeking the FIR was filed on behalf of Bam Bam Maharaj Nauhatiya, who claims to be the National Chief of the ‘Atal Jan Party.’ The wrestlers named in the complaint are Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, and Sakshi Malik. The complainant’s advocate, A P Singh, confirmed the court’s directions and emphasized the need to investigate the allegations made against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

According to the complaint, the respondents’ allegations against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh are false and have been made with the intent of personal gain or influence. The complainant argues that the allegations are practically unfeasible, given that the accused wrestlers are internationally recognized and physically fit athletes. They further contend that it is improbable that the wrestlers, who are not weak or economically disadvantaged, could be harassed by a 66-year-old man.

The complaint also accuses the wrestlers of organizing the protest at Jantar Mantar solely to exert unnecessary pressure on the police and the court, in order to achieve their desired outcomes. Furthermore, it alleges that the respondents, along with others, have raised anti-Modi slogans during the protest.

The complainant seeks a direction from the court to the police to register an FIR based on these allegations.

The court’s decision to seek an ATR from the Delhi Police indicates that it is taking the complaint seriously and wishes to evaluate the merits of the allegations made against the wrestlers. The upcoming report, to be submitted by June 9, will provide insights into the police’s investigation and actions taken in response to the complaint.

It remains to be seen how the court will proceed with this matter after reviewing the police report. The case has garnered significant attention due to the involvement of prominent wrestlers and the allegations of false accusations against a respected figure in the wrestling community. As the hearings continue, the court will play a crucial role in determining the validity of the claims and ensuring justice is served in this complex situation.
