Launched on July 14, 2023, via the GSLV Mark 3 heavy-lift launch vehicle from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Chandrayaan-3 embarked on its journey to explore the Moon. The spacecraft entered lunar orbit on August 5, marking a significant milestone in this third lunar expedition undertaken by India.

In its quest to achieve a soft landing on the Moon, Chandrayaan-3 has undertaken a series of intricate maneuvers. On August 6, 9, and 14, successive orbit reduction maneuvers were meticulously executed to bring the spacecraft closer to its destination. The latest update from ISRO, released on August 16, confirmed the successful completion of the fifth and final lunar orbit manoeuvre.

Next Crucial Step

The next crucial step in Chandrayaan-3’s mission is scheduled for August 17. ISRO plans to execute the separation of the Lander Module from the Propulsion Module on this day. Also a critical step in preparing for the upcoming lunar landing. The spacecraft’s propulsion module will then gear up for a separate journey. As the Lander Module readies itself for the challenging task ahead.

Chandrayaan-3’s manoeuvre planned for August 23 holds immense significance as it targets a soft landing on the Moon’s south polar region.

The spacecraft is poised to descend to the lunar surface from an orbit where the closest point to the Moon (Perilune). This is at a distance of 30 km, while the farthest point (Apolune) is positioned 100 km away. If successful, Chandrayaan-3 will not only cement India’s position as a major player in space exploration. But will also contribute valuable insights into the Moon’s terrain and its history.

Conclusion

The Chandrayaan-3 mission serves as a testament to India’s growing prowess in space exploration. Its dedication to advancing scientific knowledge for the betterment of humanity.

As the world watches with bated breath. All eyes will be on ISRO and the Chandrayaan-3 team as they endeavour to make history on August 23, taking one giant leap closer to unravelling the mysteries of our celestial neighbour.
