The Union Cabinet has granted approval for the establishment of a metro rail line connecting HUDA City Centre station to Cyber City in Gurugram, as part of efforts to bolster public transportation in the national capital region. The project will be undertaken by the Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation Limited (HMRTC), a special purpose vehicle formed as a 50:50 joint venture between the Centre and the Haryana government.
The proposed metro line will cover a distance of 28.50 kilometers and feature 27 stations along the route. Metro trains on this line will have a design speed of 80 kilometers per hour and an average speed of 34 kilometers per hour. The entire project will be elevated and is projected to be completed within a span of four years.
This new metro line will facilitate connectivity between New Gurugram and the older parts of the city, providing improved accessibility for residents and commuters. The Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry stated that the project will contribute to the overall economic development of the region. Furthermore, future plans involve extending the metro line to connect with the Indira Gandhi International Airport, further enhancing transportation options for travelers.
The Cabinet’s decision supports the vision of strengthening public transportation infrastructure and addressing the growing demands of urban mobility in Gurugram. The project will significantly benefit the estimated population of 25 lakh (2.5 million) in Gurugram, with expected daily ridership of 5.34 lakh (534,000) by 2026, 7.26 lakh (726,000) by 2031, 8.81 lakh (881,000) by 2041, and 10.70 lakh (1.07 million) by 2051.
The Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry also mentioned that the total cost for completing the metro rail project is estimated to be Rs 5,452 crore. Funding for the project is being sought through collaborations with the European Investment Bank and the World Bank.
