Dr. S. S. Badrinath, a visionary ophthalmologist and the founder of Sankara Nethralaya, passed away on November 21, 2023, at the age of 83. He was a pioneer in the field of eye care and a true humanitarian who dedicated his life to restoring sight to the less fortunate.

Born in Chennai, India, in 1940, Dr. Badrinath developed a passion for ophthalmology at a young age. After completing his medical education, he pursued further training in vitreoretinal surgery in the United States and the United Kingdom. Upon his return to India, he was deeply moved by the plight of millions of people who were blind due to poverty and lack of access to quality eye care.

In 1978, Dr. Badrinath founded Sankara Nethralaya, a charitable eye hospital, with the mission of providing affordable and high-quality eye care to the underserved communities of India. Starting with a small clinic, he built Sankara Nethralaya into a world-renowned institution, providing comprehensive eye care services to millions of patients, both locally and internationally.

Dr. Badrinath’s contributions to the field of ophthalmology were immense. He was a pioneer in vitreoretinal surgery, a complex procedure that restores sight to patients with retinal detachments. He also developed innovative techniques for treating diabetic retinopathy and cataract blindness, significantly improving the lives of countless individuals.
