Chelsea were founded in 1905 by Gus Mears, who wanted to create a team that would rival the success of Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur. The club’s first home ground was Stamford Bridge, which is still the club’s home today. Chelsea’s early years were relatively successful, and the club won the First Division championship in 1955. However, the club went through a period of decline in the 1960s and 1970s, and they were relegated from the First Division in 1975.
Chelsea returned to the First Division in 1979, and they began to rebuild their fortunes in the 1980s. The club won the FA Cup in 1987, and they reached the European Cup Winners’ Cup final in 1991. In 1996, Roman Abramovich bought the club, and he invested heavily in the team. This investment led to a period of sustained success for Chelsea, and the club won the Premier League title in 2005, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2020 and 2021.
