Introduction
In the ongoing investigation into the tragic death of a first-year undergraduate student at Jadavpur University, three more individuals were arrested on Friday, bringing the total number of arrests to 12. The student’s demise, allegedly as a result of ragging and sexual harassment, has prompted a series of developments, including police action, university responses, and political commentary.

The arrests were made in connection with the unfortunate incident that occurred last week, which led to the demise of a 17-year-old undergraduate student. The university’s senior students and ex-students have been accused of being involved in the alleged ragging and sexual harassment that reportedly contributed to the student’s death.
Jadavpur University, a venerable institution with a 67-year history, has submitted a comprehensive report to the University Grants Commission (UGC) in response to inquiries about the incident. The UGC had mandated this report to address concerns surrounding the alleged incident and its aftermath.
Registrar Snehamanju Basu informed the Press Trust of India that the university submitted a detailed compliance report accompanied by documentary evidence before the deadline on Thursday. The document aims to provide clarity on the circumstances leading to the student’s tragic passing.
The recent arrests include individuals hailing from Purba Bardhaman, Nadia, and Murshidabad districts. One of the arrested individuals is pursuing a PhD course from a private institute, another was a post-graduate chemistry student, and the third is a fourth-year computer science student. Their arrests followed extensive questioning during which their replies were deemed “incoherent” by the police.
Incident leading to Political discourse
Notably, the aftermath of the incident has also led to political discourse. Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari expressed the view that the Jadavpur University campus needs to be rid of “anti-national elements.” Adhikari, who is the leader of the opposition, met with the bereaved family and assured them of his party’s support. He criticized the university for allegedly harboring individuals with “anti-establishment and secessionist ideologies.”
Furthermore, tensions escalated on the campus as members of different student organizations clashed. The BJYM (BJP Yuva Morcha) protested against the dismantling of their podium by Kolkata Police. The CPI(M)’s student wing SFI also demonstrated, demanding the arrest of BJYM members allegedly involved in assaulting RSF (All India Revolutionary Students Federation) activists.
Conclusion
The incident has sparked broader discussions about campus safety, anti-ragging measures, and the role of student organizations. As the investigation unfolds, the university, police, and political figures are all closely involved in seeking answers and addressing the concerns that have arisen in the wake of this tragic event.
