The tiebreak saga unfolded in dramatic fashion, as Praggnanandhaa and Arjun engaged in three sets of tiebreak games. With two draws in the initial 25+10 rapid tiebreaks, Praggnanandhaa secured a lead by claiming victories in the first game of both the 10+10 rapid tiebreaks and the 5+3 blitz tiebreaks, both times wielding the black pieces. Arjun, however, orchestrated stunning comebacks, snatching wins to level the score each time.

The climax of the match had reached in the 3+2 blitz tiebreaker, where Praggnanandhaa, despite a 30-second late arrival, managed to seize victory with the white pieces.

Solidified Place in Semi Finals

This hard-fought triumph solidified his place in the semifinals, where he is slated to face GM Fabiano Caruana after a well-deserved rest day.

On the flip side of the FIDE Women’s World Cup, Bulgarian IM Nurgyul Salimova continued her remarkable journey with a victory over higher-seeded GM Anna Muzychuk. Salimova’s tactical prowess and aggressive style propelled her to a 1.5-0.5 victory in the 10+10 rapid tiebreaks, clinching her a spot in the 2024 Women’s Candidates. Her remarkable journey also sets the stage for a finals clash against Aleksandra Goryachkina.

Both events have kept the global chess community captivated, with the first games of round seven scheduled to commence on Saturday, August 18th. Praggnanandhaa’s praise for Arjun’s opening preparation further highlighted the caliber of play in the tournament. Arjun’s innovative and at times unconventional concepts demonstrated his mastery of the game, challenging Praggnanandhaa throughout their encounter.

Conclusion

As the world watches in anticipation, these remarkable players continue to push the boundaries of strategic and tactical chess. Their dedication, skill, and resilience serve as a testament to the enduring allure of the sport, captivating audiences with each move on the board.
