Introduction

Ukrainian singer Uma Shanti, the front woman of the musical band ‘Shanti People’ known for blending EDM with Vedic mantras, has been booked along with event organizer Kartik More for allegedly disrespecting the Indian tricolour during a live concert in Pune. The incident occurred on the eve of Independence Day, August 14, during a musical event held at a restaurant-cum-bar in the Mundhwa area of the city.

As Uma Shanti performed on stage, she was seen holding the Indian flag and energetically waving it as part of her act. However, the situation took an unexpected turn when the singer suddenly flung the flag into the audience. This action caused immediate outrage among the attendees and sparked a controversy over the alleged disrespect shown to the national flag.

Authorities intervened

Authorities quickly intervened, with the Mundhwa police station official confirming that both Uma Shanti and Kartik More have been booked under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act and the Maharashtra Police Act. The booking stems from their actions during the live concert, which was deemed to have dishonored the national flag.

Speaking on the matter, a police spokesperson mentioned, “The alleged insult of the national flag took place at a musical event organized in a restaurant-cum-bar in the Mundhwa area of the city on the eve of Independence Day. Singer Shanti, who was holding the tricolour and waving it while performing at the concert, suddenly flung the flag into the audience.” The police have issued a notice to both individuals, requiring them to cooperate with the ongoing investigation into the incident.

Uma Shanti, a prominent figure in the music scene due to her involvement in the fusion of electronic dance music with spiritual Vedic mantras, has yet to comment on the controversy. The incident has ignited discussions about the appropriate ways to showcase patriotism and respect for national symbols while performing on stage.

Conclusion

As the investigation continues, the music industry and the public will be closely watching the developments surrounding this incident. The case sheds light on the delicate balance between artistic expression and upholding the dignity of national symbols, raising questions about the responsibilities artists bear when performing in public spaces.
