Irani’s scathing remarks targeted Gandhi’s actions. She claimed that only a “misogynist man” would exhibit such behaviour within the hallowed halls of the parliament that comprises women MPs.

She questioned the dignity of the act and called for accountability, stating, “When the House of the people…stands witness to a man’s misogyny, my question is should he be brought to task?”

The Congress party quickly countered the accusation, asserting that Rahul Gandhi had directed the flying kiss towards MPs of the ruling BJP who were engaged in vociferous slogans. A Congress leader emphasized that the gesture was an expression of goodwill, as Gandhi had referred to them as “brothers and sisters.”

However, the controversy did not end there. Female MPs from the BJP raised their voices, alleging that the alleged flying kiss had insulted women with its “indecent” undertones. BJP MP Poonam Mahajan criticized Gandhi’s behavior, remarking that it reflected his upbringing.

The Opposition came to Rahul Gandhi’s defense, labeling the gesture as an “affectionate” one directed towards political opponents. Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi asserted, “It was a gesture of affection towards the treasury benches, but BJP doesn’t understand any love.”

This incident isn’t the first time Rahul Gandhi’s actions have sparked controversy. In 2018, he hugged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and winked at colleagues, triggering a storm of debates and memes.

Conclusion

With tensions running high, this clash between Smriti Irani and Rahul Gandhi adds to the growing political discord in the Lok Sabha. The No-Confidence Motion debate continues, all eyes are now on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s response. The incident underscores the deepening divide between political rivals and highlights the ongoing struggle for maintaining decorum within India’s parliamentary system.
