Introduction
In a bid to transform railway stations across India into world-class facilities, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually laid the foundation stone for the redevelopment of 508 railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Addressing concerns about potential fare hikes due to the massive station redevelopment project, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw assured the public that there would be “no hike” in fares attributed to the station overhaul.

At a press conference, Minister Vaishnaw emphasized that the project’s primary objective is to enhance the lives of ordinary citizens by providing state-of-the-art stations without burdening them with increased fares. He stated, “PM Modi is working to elevate the lives of the common people. The aim of station redevelopment is the same. We want them to have world-class stations without any burden. We have not increased fare or fixed a fee in the name of station redevelopment.”
Vaishnaw further outlined that the re-development project would involve the participation of around 9,000 engineers. Highlighting the government’s commitment to equitable development, he clarified that no state had been discriminated against in the allocation of stations for redevelopment. The minister also expressed optimism about the project’s progress, noting substantial advancements over the next two years.
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme encompasses 508 stations spanning 16 states and Union Territories. The estimated cost of the ambitious project is ₹24,470 crore. Among the states, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan will see the most significant station redevelopments, with 55 stations each. Bihar follows closely with 49 stations, while Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Madhya Pradesh have 44, 37, and 34 stations respectively. The scheme aims to rejuvenate railway infrastructure in various regions. A substantial focus is on upgrading facilities and enhancing economic activity in nearby areas is also promised.
Prime Minister Modi echoes the sentiment, emphasising that the government’s committment to making rail journeys accessible and enjoyable. He asserted that the revamped stations would not only boost tourism but also contribute to economic growth in the vicinity. The project’s foundation stone laying ceremony signaled the beginning of a transformative journey for the Indian railways.
