Mumbai, August 30, 2023

The third meeting of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) opposition bloc, originally scheduled to take place on August 25-26 in Mumbai, is facing uncertainty as key leaders are preoccupied with other commitments during that period. According to sources cited in a PTI report, the meeting might be postponed to September to ensure the presence of all leaders.

The INDIA bloc, consisting of 27 parties, came into formal existence during its second meeting held in Bengaluru. Since then, it has been focused on voicing its concerns and seeking accountability from the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government.

One of the first significant actions taken by INDIA was the no-confidence motion in the Lok Sabha, initiated by the Congress party. While the motion is unlikely to pose a threat to the NDA government due to its numerical advantage, INDIA aims to pressure Prime Minister Narendra Modi into addressing the issue of Manipur violence during parliamentary sessions.

However, the upcoming Mumbai meeting is now in question as several prominent opposition leaders have prior commitments during the proposed dates. Leaders from Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) led by Sharad Pawar, and Shiv Sena led by Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray have rallies to attend on August 25-26.

Of particular interest is the uncertainty surrounding Sharad Pawar’s attendance. Following the split within the NCP between Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar, speculations have arisen over Sharad Pawar’s future course of action. During the previous meeting, his absence on the first day sparked initial speculations that he might skip the gathering entirely. This time, Sharad Pawar has an event scheduled in Pune on August 1, where he is expected to share the stage with Prime Minister Modi.

Given the significance of Sharad Pawar’s role in the opposition bloc, his availability for the Mumbai meeting holds particular importance. The postponement to September would allow all leaders, including Sharad Pawar, to participate in the discussions, fostering a more cohesive and impactful opposition stance.

The first meeting of the INDIA bloc was held in Patna, where the groundwork for a united front against the NDA government was laid. Since then, the bloc has been striving to consolidate its efforts and build a robust opposition narrative to address various issues affecting the country.

As the political landscape remains dynamic, the final decision regarding the Mumbai meeting’s schedule is yet to be announced. The nation will be closely watching the developments within the INDIA bloc as it attempts to galvanize opposition forces and present a unified front in the Parliament.
