In a move to prevent “malpractices” in Tihar Jail and discourage any collusion of inmates with jail officials, 99 officials have been transferred from Tihar to other Delhi jails. The transfer comes after the recent incident in which an ally of Sunil Baliyan, Tillu Tajpuriya, was stabbed to death inside the jail.
According to jail officials, the transfer is a routine matter aimed at ensuring the safety of inmates and preventing any possibility of collusion between inmates and jail officials. The officials who have been transferred include wardens, guards, and other administrative staff.
According to the order, 11 deputy superintendents, 12 assistant superintendents, 13 head wardens, 57 jail wardens, two head matrons, and four drivers were transferred to other jails. At least six jail officials from jail 8 and 9 have been transferred. The officials have already suspended seven Tamil Nadu SP jail officials from jail 8 for negligence.
Speaking to the press, a Tihar Jail spokesperson said, “We have transferred 99 officials from Tihar Jail to other jails in Delhi. This is a routine matter aimed at preventing malpractices inside the jail and ensuring the safety and security of inmates. The recent incident in which an inmate was killed has prompted us to take this step to prevent any such incidents in the future.”
The spokesperson further added that the transfer of officials will also help to maintain the discipline and order inside the jail. “This will send a strong message to other inmates and discourage any attempts to collude with jail officials. We are committed to ensuring that Tihar Jail remains a safe and secure place for all inmates,” the spokesperson said.
The transfer of officials has been carried out after a thorough review of the security arrangements in Tihar Jail. The Delhi Prison Department has also been asked to take all necessary steps to ensure the safety and security of inmates in all jails across the city.
