Wrestlers protest takes new form of action

In a powerful display of defiance and seeking justice, a group of prominent Indian wrestlers, including Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia, and Vinesh Phogat, have taken a stand against the President of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who faces allegations of sexual harassment. The wrestlers have announced their intentions to throw their hard-earned medals into the sacred river Ganga in Haridwar at 6 pm, symbolizing their anguish and disappointment. Subsequently, they plan to stage an indefinite hunger strike at India Gate in New Delhi.

Issuing a joint statement, the wrestlers expressed their deep frustration and disappointment with the lack of action taken against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. They voiced their concerns over the Prime Minister’s silence on the matter, stating that despite being referred to as “daughters” by the nation’s leader, they felt neglected and betrayed. The wrestlers highlighted the Prime Minister’s invitation to Singh for the inauguration of the new Parliament building, which they believed further undermined their cause.

The video statement released by Rio Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik revealed the unwavering determination of the wrestlers. She denounced the police action taken against them at Jantar Mantar and affirmed that they would not back down. Sakshi Malik reassured their supporters that they were strategizing their next steps and urged them to continue their unwavering support.

The treatment meted out to the wrestlers by the police sparked widespread condemnation from political leaders, sports personalities, and the general public. Abhinav Bindra, India’s first individual Olympic gold medallist, expressed his sleeplessness and haunting by the horrifying images of police action against the wrestlers. Indian football captain, Sunil Chhetri, questioned the lack of consideration shown towards the athletes and called for a thorough assessment of the situation. Former all-rounder Irfan Pathan echoed the sentiments, urging a swift resolution to the issue.

As the news of the wrestlers’ protest spreads, the sporting fraternity and the general public await further updates on their planned actions. The courageous stand taken by these athletes not only sheds light on the importance of addressing sexual harassment allegations but also highlights the need for a safe and inclusive environment for all athletes in India.

The wrestling community and supporters hope that the wrestlers’ demands for justice will be heard and that appropriate measures will be taken to address the serious allegations against the Wrestling Federation of India president. The coming days will undoubtedly witness continued attention on this matter as the wrestlers’ hunger strike and protests unfold, challenging the nation to confront and rectify the issue at hand.
