Global leaders express hopes for collaboration on shared challenges and strengthening bilateral relations

In a show of international recognition and support, world leaders have congratulated Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on his historic election victory, which extends his two-decade rule. Among those extending their congratulations are US President Joe Biden, Russian President Vladimir Putin, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and many others. The messages conveyed a range of sentiments, emphasizing the importance of cooperation, strengthening bilateral ties, and addressing shared global challenges.

President Biden, in a tweet, expressed his desire to work with Erdogan on common global issues, highlighting the importance of the NATO alliance and bilateral relations. He made no reference to recent tensions in the relationship, signaling a willingness to move forward collaboratively.

Russian President Putin, who has previously collaborated closely with Erdogan on key international matters despite occasional disagreements, referred to Erdogan’s win as the logical outcome of his dedicated work. Putin praised Erdogan’s efforts to strengthen state sovereignty and pursue an independent foreign policy, acknowledging the support of the Turkish people.

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, emphasized the strategic importance of the EU-Turkey relationship. She expressed a commitment to strengthening ties and working towards the mutual benefit of the people of both entities. Erdogan has expressed a desire for Turkey to join the European Union, and von der Leyen’s message reflects the EU’s willingness to engage in dialogue.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg conveyed his congratulations and looked forward to continuing collaboration with Turkey. Stoltenberg mentioned the upcoming NATO Summit in July, underscoring the importance of ongoing cooperation within the military alliance.

Leaders from various other countries, including Ukraine, Greece, Germany, India, and Pakistan, also extended their congratulations to Erdogan. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed hope for the strengthening of the strategic partnership between their countries, particularly in the context of security and stability in Europe. Greek leaders conveyed their wishes for improved relations, highlighting the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation.

The messages of congratulations extended beyond Europe. Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning emphasized the importance of Turkey’s development path and expressed Beijing’s support for President Erdogan’s leadership. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi anticipated further growth in bilateral ties and cooperation on global issues, while Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised Erdogan as a pillar of strength for oppressed Muslims and a dynamic leader.

Leaders from Afghanistan, the United Arab Emirates, and South Africa also congratulated Erdogan and expressed their desires for enhanced cooperation, stronger strategic partnerships, and the consolidation of existing relations.

President Erdogan’s electoral victory has garnered international attention and recognition. The well-wishes from global leaders underscore the importance of collaboration on shared challenges, the strengthening of bilateral relations, and the pursuit of peace, stability, and prosperity for their respective countries and regions. As President Erdogan embarks on this new term, the world will be watching closely to see how these aspirations translate into actions and tangible outcomes.
