Introduction
In a groundbreaking move, the World Health Organization (WHO) in collaboration with the G20 India presidency has unveiled the Global Initiative on Digital Health (GIDH) during the Health Minister’s Meeting of the G20 Summit, hosted by the Government of India. This significant announcement marks a pivotal moment in the realm of global healthcare and technology.

The GIDH initiative, fondly referred to as “guide,” is set to operate as a dynamic network and platform managed by the WHO. It aims to provide robust support for the effective implementation of the Global Strategy on Digital Health 2020–2025. By acting as the Secretariat for the strategy’s execution, the WHO aims to bring about convergence and harmonization of global standards, best practices, and resources to expedite the transformation of digital health systems.
Director General of WHO expressed Gratitude
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the WHO, expressed gratitude for the recognition of the organization’s unique role and capabilities in this domain. He emphasized the need for continued support and collaboration from G20 countries, development partners, and international organizations to collectively achieve transformative goals. Dr. Ghebreyesus underscored WHO’s commitment to strengthening countries’ capacities and enhancing access to quality-assured digital solutions, thereby shaping a healthier, safer, and fairer future.
During the launch event, India’s Union Health Minister, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, hailed the day as a historic milestone for the G20 Health Working Group. He highlighted the collective effort and priority-setting exhibited by G20 nations that culminated in the establishment of the Global Initiative on Digital Health. This initiative stands as a crucial accomplishment of India’s G20 Presidency.
Since the inception of the first WHO resolution on ehealth in 2005, which paved the way for the Global Strategy on Digital Health, over 120 WHO Member States have formulated national digital health policies or strategies. Although the COVID-19 pandemic spurred increased usage of digital health, many countries have expressed the need for assistance in transitioning from pilot initiatives to a comprehensive national digital health infrastructure, complete with proper governance, policies, and a skilled healthcare workforce.
The GIDH initiative is geared towards fostering collaboration between countries and partners to achieve tangible outcomes. Its objectives encompass developing investment plans that prioritize digital health transformation, enhancing transparency in reporting digital health resources, fostering knowledge exchange and collaboration across regions and countries, advocating for holistic government approaches to digital health governance, and offering technical and financial support for the implementation of the Global Strategy on Digital Health 2020–2025.
Conclusion
The launch of the Global Initiative on Digital Health has been accompanied by substantial commitments in both financial contributions and resources from multiple stakeholders. Digital health has demonstrated its prowess as a catalyst for advancing health outcomes, contributing to Universal Health Coverage and the health-related Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. These digital interventions play a multifaceted role in improving healthcare, from empowering individuals to manage their well-being, assisting healthcare providers in delivering high-quality care, to strengthening healthcare systems through enhanced supply chains and workforce management.
The GIDH initiative, backed by the collective strength of WHO, G20 countries, and a multitude of partners, promises to reshape the landscape of global healthcare by leveraging the transformative power of digital technologies.
