In a recent development, a vigilance department report has brought to light the alleged irregularities and flouting of rules in the renovation of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s official residence and camp office. The report, submitted to Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena, reveals that the Delhi government spent a staggering Rs 52.71 crore for the renovation project in 2020, amidst the Covid pandemic.
According to the report, the cost of renovating the CM’s house amounted to Rs 33.49 crore, while the camp office renovation stood at Rs 19.22 crore. The investigation indicates that numerous rules were violated, and necessary approvals were not sought during the execution of the project.
One of the key findings of the report highlights the inclusion of extravagant designer accessories and fittings worth Rs 48 lakh, artistic and ornamental work costing Rs 5 crore, marble work valued at Rs 2.4 crore, and a sauna bath and jacuzzi worth Rs 20 lakh. Additionally, a fancy modular kitchen worth over a crore was installed during the renovation.
The report also raises concerns about the irregularities in tree transplantation and the building plan. It states that the Public Works Department (PWD) of the Delhi government did not follow proper procedures in felling and relocating trees. Only 83 out of the required 280 trees were found to have been planted at the designated location, while the remaining 137 trees were unaccounted for.
Furthermore, the report reveals that changes were made to the project scope without obtaining the necessary sanctions for building plans. The revised interior design drawings were executed by a consultant named “Bobby Mukherji and Associates,” whose appointment was not formally documented, as per the records provided by the PWD.
The controversy surrounding the renovation of the CM’s residence gained attention after the Lieutenant Governor directed the Chief Secretary to investigate the alleged irregularities. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), to which Arvind Kejriwal belongs, responded to the report by accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to tarnish the CM’s image. The AAP spokesperson defended the renovation, emphasizing that it was the first official CM residence complex in Delhi and suggesting that the BJP should focus on investigating other matters, such as the Adani scam.
In contrast, the BJP’s Delhi unit supported the report’s findings, describing the renovation as a case of illegal construction disguised as renovation work. The party spokesperson condemned the irregularities and highlighted the need for accountability.
The vigilance department report has raised serious concerns about the alleged misuse of public funds and the violation of established procedures during the renovation of the Chief Minister’s residence. The findings now await a response from the authorities concerned, and further actions may be taken based on the investigation’s outcome.
As the situation develops, it is essential to ensure transparency and accountability in public expenditure, especially when it involves taxpayer money and the residences of elected officials.
