Soaring Tomato Prices Lead to Unusual Incidents and Temporary Removal of Tomatoes from Subway Menu
July 31, 2023
In the midst of rising tomato prices that have caused concern across India, a peculiar incident has captured widespread attention. A truck carrying tomatoes worth approximately Rs 21 lakh from Karnataka’s Kolar to Rajasthan’s Jaipur has mysteriously disappeared, prompting suspicions towards the driver and the cleaner.
The truck, owned by Mehat Transport of Kolar, began its journey on July 27 but has failed to reach its destination. The mandi owner in Kolar, upon learning of the truck’s disappearance, filed a complaint with the police. The owner’s attempts to contact the driver have proven futile, leading investigators to suspect foul play involving the driver and the cleaner, who may have allegedly stolen both the vehicle and its precious cargo.
In a separate but seemingly related incident, a farmer in Karnataka’s Hassan district reported the theft of tomatoes worth Rs 1.5 lakh from his farm in July. The farmer was dismayed to find approximately 50-60 bags of tomatoes missing from his premises, leaving him empty-handed and with substantial losses.
As tomato prices continue to soar in various regions, Tamil Nadu’s state capital has witnessed the wholesale price reaching an astonishing Rs 200 per kilogram. Some retail shops have even sold tomatoes at Rs 185 per kilogram, and traders are speculating that the price could climb further to Rs 250 per kilogram within a week.
The surge in tomato prices has also affected the Delhi-NCR region, where tomatoes, which were previously priced at Rs 20-30 per kilogram, are now fetching Rs 110-160 per kilogram. The impact of the escalating prices has led to Subway, a popular fast-food restaurant franchise, taking drastic measures. To mitigate the challenges posed by the tomato price hike and supply chain disruptions due to quality concerns, Subway outlets have temporarily suspended the use of tomatoes in their sandwiches and salads.
In a notable example of this initiative, a Subway store located at a Delhi airport terminal displayed a sign courteously informing customers about the “Temporary Unavailability of TOMATOES.” The sign explained that the decision was driven by the difficulty in sourcing sufficient tomatoes that meet the brand’s stringent quality control standards.
As investigations into the missing truck and stolen tomatoes continue, authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. The incidents highlight the severity of the ongoing tomato crisis and its far-reaching impact on both individuals and businesses across the country.
