Four members of nomadic family lose their life as tree falls on their tent

Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir – In a devastating incident that occurred on Thursday morning, a nomadic family in the Keshwan area of Kishtwar district faced an unfortunate fate when a large tree fell on their tent, resulting in the death of four family members, including three females. The incident took place after heavy rainfall and gusty winds hit the region.

The Bakerwal family, who were on their seasonal migration accompanied by their sheep and goats, were en route to Dachan. However, due to the inclement weather conditions, they decided to halt their journey and set up their tent in the Bhalna forest area, approximately 50 kilometers from Kishtwar town.

Tragedy struck when a massive pine tree collapsed onto their tent, instantly claiming the lives of Nazir Ahmed, son of Chatu, his wife Nissara Begum, Maimna Begum, wife of Mohd Shareef, and Shamma Begum, wife of Kalu. The victims, all residents of Gathi-Barwal in Kathua district, were killed on the spot.

Upon receiving the distress call, the local authorities swiftly responded to the scene. A police team was dispatched immediately, initiating a rescue operation to aid any survivors and retrieve the bodies. The deceased individuals will be transported to the hospital to complete necessary legal procedures.

Expressing deep condolences, Dr. Devansh Yadav, the Deputy Commissioner of Kishtwar, described the incident as a heart-wrenching tragedy. He confirmed that the local administration is taking all necessary measures to provide support and assistance to the affected family. As an initial step, the Red Cross Society has extended immediate financial relief of Rs 50,000 to each of the bereaved families.

This devastating incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable and hazardous conditions that can arise in natural environments, particularly during periods of severe weather. It also highlights the vulnerability faced by nomadic communities, who often lead a challenging lifestyle while moving from one place to another in search of suitable grazing areas for their livestock.

The authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have emphasized the importance of caution and vigilance during adverse weather conditions. They have urged individuals and families, especially those on migratory paths, to remain updated on weather forecasts and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.

As the affected family mourns the loss of their loved ones, the local community and government agencies are rallying together to provide support and comfort during this difficult time. Efforts are being made to raise awareness about the potential risks posed by extreme weather events and to enhance safety measures to prevent such tragic incidents from occurring in the future.
