In a shocking incident that unfolded on the Jaipur-Mumbai Central Superfast Express (12956), a Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable, identified as Chetan Singh, went on a deadly shooting spree, resulting in the death of four people, including an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI). The tragic event occurred on Monday morning near the Palghar railway station in Maharashtra.
According to reports, the constable, Chetan Singh, who hailed from Hathras in Uttar Pradesh, exhibited a short temper and a volatile disposition. The horrific incident began when he suddenly turned his official automatic weapon on his senior colleague, ASI Tikaram Meena, during the journey. The motive behind the initial shooting remains unclear, with no prior altercation between the two.
Chetan Singh’s violent rampage did not stop with his senior’s murder. He continued to unleash terror by indiscriminately firing at other passengers in separate coaches. Three other innocent travelers fell victim to his senseless violence. The victims’ identities are yet to be officially released.
The train authorities, along with the Government Railway Police and RPF officials, swiftly swung into action after Chetan Singh pulled the emergency chain and fled the scene at Dahisar Station. A thorough search led to his apprehension at Mira Road. The accused was later arrested, and his weapon was recovered.
As authorities and law enforcement personnel continue their investigation, it has come to light that Chetan Singh was part of a four-member escort team assigned to protect the Jaipur-Mumbai Central Express. The team’s responsibility was to ensure the safety of passengers during the train’s journey from Surat station, Gujarat.
The railway community is devastated by the loss of ASI Tikaram Meena, who was a resident of Rajasthan’s Sawai Madhopur. He leaves behind his family, including his wife, two married children, and an elderly mother. In the wake of this tragic incident, the Western Railways has announced compensations to support ASI Tikaram Meena’s family, including a sum of ₹15 lakhs from Railway Surksha Kalyan Nidhi, ₹20,000 for funeral expenses, ₹15 lakhs as Death-cum-Retirement Gratuity, and ₹65,000 as part of the General Insurance Scheme.
The incident has sparked concern over the mental health and emotional well-being of personnel working in critical security roles within the railway force. Authorities are expected to conduct a high-level inquiry into the matter to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
