Ajit Pawar, a prominent figure in Maharashtra’s political arena, has embarked on a tumultuous journey marked by ambition, achievements, controversies, and a deep sense of resentment. As a protege of his uncle, Sharad Pawar, the patriarch of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Ajit Pawar has always displayed a hunger for power and an eagerness for the next chapter of his political career.
Known affectionately as Dada (elder brother in Marathi) among his supporters, Ajit Pawar began his political journey under the guidance of his uncle in the 1980s. He experienced his first taste of electoral success in 1991 when he won the Baramati Lok Sabha seat. However, his determination to pave the way for his uncle’s ascension led him to resign shortly after, allowing Sharad Pawar to become the Defense Minister in the P.V. Narasimha Rao government.
Ajit Pawar then embarked on a successful career as an MLA, representing the Baramati constituency for six terms. Despite his meteoric rise in Maharashtra’s politics, he has always carried a lingering feeling of being “suppressed” and “denied” his ultimate destiny of becoming the Chief Minister. This sentiment of being unjustly overlooked by Sharad Pawar since 2004 fueled a deep-seated bitterness that eventually led Ajit Pawar to revolt against his own party and align himself with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to secure the position of Deputy Chief Minister for an unprecedented fifth term.
In a dramatic turn of events in July, Ajit Pawar orchestrated a vertical split within the NCP, joining the Eknath Shinde-Devendra Fadnavis government. This move, along with the induction of eight other NCP legislators as Ministers, created fractures in the family bonds and loyalty that once held the party together.
Despite serving as Deputy Chief Minister multiple times, Ajit Pawar’s ambition to become the Chief Minister of Maharashtra remains unfulfilled. His supporters see him as a potential leader with strong leadership skills, while his detractors view him as an opportunist solely driven by a thirst for power.
The dynamics within the NCP, including the succession battle triggered by Sharad Pawar’s decision to choose his daughter Supriya Sule as the party’s working president, have further strained party dynamics. Ajit Pawar’s discontent has been amplified by the coalition government projecting Uddhav Thackeray as the face of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition.
Throughout his political career, Ajit Pawar has faced controversies, including allegations of involvement in the irrigation scam and investigations by enforcement agencies. Despite these challenges, he remains determined to achieve his political ambitions and implement his own plans for the welfare of the people.
As the power struggle within the Pawar family and the NCP continues, the repercussions of Ajit Pawar’s revolt have shaken the once unshakeable loyalty and familial bonds that held the party together. The clash between ambition, family dynamics, and party politics has created a significant fracture within the NCP, altering Maharashtra’s political landscape.
