In a remarkable achievement, Tamil Nadu has excelled in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) undergraduate-2023 examination, with Prabanjan J emerging as the joint national topper alongside Bora Varun Chakravarthi from Andhra Pradesh. Both students scored a perfect 720 out of 720, achieving a percentile of 99.99%.
This is the first time a candidate from Tamil Nadu has secured the top rank in this national entrance test. Notably, Tamil Nadu has also witnessed six students in the top 50 ranks, including four students in the top 10.
Out of the 1,44,516 students from Tamil Nadu who appeared for NEET 2023, an impressive 78,693 students have successfully cleared the test. However, the overall pass percentage has slightly decreased to 54.45% compared to last year’s 57%.
Kaustav Bauri from Tamil Nadu secured the all-India third rank, while Surya Siddharth N secured the sixth rank. Varun S, Samuel Harshith Tsapa, and Jacob Bivin secured the ninth, 24th, and 36th ranks, respectively.
Prabanjan J, who achieved the top rank in his first attempt, expressed his surprise at the result. He credited his success to his teachers and coaching provided by a private residential school in Mogappair East. Prabanjan’s father, a teacher at a government school in Villupuram, expressed pride in his son’s achievement.
Across the country, a total of 11.45 lakh candidates out of 20.38 lakh have qualified in the NEET examination. Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of qualifying candidates (1.39 lakh), followed by Maharashtra and Rajasthan. Tamil Nadu secured the fourth position with 78,693 students clearing the test.
The NEET examination was conducted by the National Testing Agency at numerous centers across India and 14 cities outside the country. The test was held in 13 languages to ensure accessibility for candidates. The NTA has provided all-India ranks to candidates, and the admitting authorities will draw merit lists for MBBS and BDS seats based on these ranks.
Experts have hailed Tamil Nadu’s performance in NEET 2023 as the best ever by students from the state. They attribute the success to the relatively easier biology paper this year, which played to the strengths of Tamil Nadu’s science stream students. Among girls, Pranjal Aggarwal from Punjab secured the highest marks, followed by Ashika Aggarwal, also from Punjab, and Arya R S from Kerala.
With this remarkable performance, Tamil Nadu’s students have once again showcased their academic excellence in the field of medicine, marking a significant milestone in their educational journey.
