New Delhi, May 26, 2023 – The Ministry of Finance announced today that a special ₹75 coin will be launched to commemorate the inauguration of India’s new parliament building. This coin holds particular significance as it pays tribute to India’s 75 years of independence and will be unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday.
The commemorative coin features a design that showcases the rich cultural heritage and democratic spirit of the nation. One side of the coin prominently displays the Lion Capital of the Ashoka Pillar, an iconic symbol of India’s enduring strength and unity. Below the majestic lion, the words “Satyamev Jayate” are inscribed, reaffirming the nation’s commitment to truth and righteousness.
To further represent the unity of India, the word “Bharat” is written in Devanagari script on the left side, while the word “India” is inscribed in English on the right. Additionally, the coin bears the rupee symbol and the denomination value of 75 in international numerals below the Lion Capital.
The reverse side of the coin portrays an image of the new parliament complex, symbolizing the democratic principles upon which the nation was built. The words “Sansad Sankul” are written in Devanagari script on the upper periphery, while “Parliament Complex” is inscribed in English on the lower periphery.
Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, the circular coin measures 44 millimeters in diameter and features 200 serrations along its edges. Composed of a four-part alloy, the coin contains 50% silver, 40% copper, 5% nickel, and 5% zinc, adding to its aesthetic appeal and value.
The inauguration of the new parliament building, scheduled for Sunday, has garnered attention and stirred political discussions across the nation. While an estimated 25 parties are expected to attend the ceremony, a significant number of opposition parties, including Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, Left, Trinamool, and Samajwadi Party, have decided to boycott the event.
Their decision to boycott stems from their belief that inaugurating a new building holds little value when they perceive the “soul of democracy” to have been diminished. They express discontent over Prime Minister Modi leading the inauguration instead of President Droupadi Murmu, which they believe undermines the democratic principles and constitutional values of the country.
In response, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) strongly criticized the opposition’s decision, labelling it a “blatant affront to democratic ethos and constitutional values of our great nation.” The NDA defended the Prime Minister’s role in the inauguration and highlighted the significance of the new parliament building as a symbol of India’s progress and future aspirations.
