Mumbai, May 19, 2023 – Chinese online fast fashion brand Shein is set to make a comeback in the Indian market, nearly three years after being banned by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in the midst of escalating tensions with China. Industry sources have revealed that Shein has partnered with Reliance Retail, the retail arm of Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries, to re-establish its presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing fashion markets.
The ban on Shein and several other Chinese apps in June 2020 was prompted by the increasing border tensions between India and China. However, with this new partnership, Shein aims to leverage the vast opportunities available in India, while also addressing the scrutiny it has faced in other markets like the United States over sourcing practices. In addition to re-entering the Indian market, Shein plans to utilize its operations here for sourcing activities related to its global operations, including the Middle East and other markets.
Reliance Retail, which already boasts a diverse portfolio of fashion brands, stands to benefit from this collaboration as well. The agreement between Shein and Reliance Retail is expected to enable Shein to leverage Reliance Retail’s sourcing capabilities, warehousing and logistics infrastructure, as well as its extensive network of online and offline stores.
Established in 2008, Shein has gained popularity among millennials for its trendy and affordable women’s wear and other apparel. Its return to the Indian market is expected to be met with enthusiasm from fashion-conscious consumers who had missed the brand during its absence.
As of now, Reliance Retail has not responded to inquiries regarding this partnership. However, industry insiders believe that this collaboration has the potential to reshape the Indian fashion retail landscape, combining Shein’s fashionable offerings with Reliance Retail’s vast reach and infrastructure.
The ban on Shein and other Chinese apps was initially imposed due to concerns over national security and the protection of India’s sovereignty and integrity. Despite the ban, Shein products remained available through e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, leading to legal disputes that were eventually brought before the Delhi High Court.
With the Shein-Reliance Retail partnership, it seems that both companies are aiming to capitalize on the immense potential of India’s fashion market. The collaboration is expected to provide Indian consumers with a wider range of trendy and affordable fashion options while bolstering Reliance Retail’s position as a dominant player in the industry.
