Imphal, Manipur: In a series of defensive operations carried out by security forces, approximately 40 terrorists have been eliminated following clashes between Kuki militants and the military in Manipur. The violence erupted after the military initiated disarmament measures in the state to restore peace and stability.

The clashes between armed groups and security forces occurred at various locations across Manipur on Sunday. Prompt retaliatory and defensive actions were undertaken by security forces against the terrorist groups who were reportedly employing sophisticated weaponry against the civilian population. Chief Minister N Biren Singh affirmed the stringent measures taken by the authorities and confirmed the elimination of around 40 terrorists during these operations.

Contrary to initial speculations, the clashes were not of an intercommunal nature but primarily involved Kuki militants and security forces, according to Chief Minister Biren Singh. The confrontations transpired in the early hours of the morning across multiple districts surrounding the Imphal Valley, leading to sporadic incidents of firing reported from Sugnu in Kakching, Kangvi in Churachandpur, Kangchup in Imphal West, Sagolmang in Imphal East, Nungoipokpi in Bishenpur, Khurkhul in Imphal West, and YKPI in Kangpokpi, as per officials quoted by PTI.

The ongoing conflict in Manipur has its roots in ethnic tensions that have claimed over 75 lives. The unrest originated after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organized in the hill districts on May 3 in protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. Prior to these events, tensions had been escalating due to the eviction of Kuki villagers from reserve forest land, leading to a series of smaller agitations.

The demographic composition of Manipur reveals that Meiteis make up approximately 53% of the state’s population and are predominantly concentrated in the Imphal Valley. The tribal Nagas and Kukis constitute around 40% of the population and primarily reside in the hill districts.

To restore normalcy and quell the violence, a substantial deployment of security forces was necessary. Over 10,000 personnel from approximately 140 columns of the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, and other paramilitary forces were mobilized to bring the situation under control. Their concerted efforts aimed at ensuring the safety and security of all residents in the Northeastern state.

The state government, along with security forces, remains committed to resolving the ongoing conflicts through dialogue and appropriate actions. Efforts are being made to address the root causes of the tensions and foster peaceful coexistence among the diverse communities of Manipur.

As the situation evolves, authorities are closely monitoring the developments and taking necessary steps to prevent further escalation of violence. The focus remains on restoring harmony and creating an environment conducive to progress and prosperity in Manipur.
