Introduction
In a recent statement, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat voiced his support for the continuation of reservation policies in India as long as discrimination persists in society. Speaking at an event in Nagpur, Bhagwat emphasised the importance of providing equal opportunities and remedies to those who have historically faced social discrimination.
Bhagwat acknowledged that certain sections of society had been neglected and marginalised for over 2000 years in the Indian social system. He stressed that until these communities are granted equal opportunities, special measures like reservations are essential to bridge the gap.
“We kept our own fellow human beings behind in the social system. We did not care for them, and it continued for 2000 years. Until we provide them equality, some special remedies have to be there, and reservations are one of them,” Bhagwat stated, reaffirming the RSS’s support for reservations as outlined in the Indian Constitution.
Issue of Reservation Still Prominent
The RSS chief’s remarks come at a time when the issue of reservations has gained prominence, particularly concerning the Maratha community’s demand for reservation rights. Bhagwat’s stance on the matter highlights the organisation’s commitment to addressing historical inequalities and promoting social inclusivity.
During the event, Bhagwat also touched upon the concept of ‘Akhand Bharat,’ which envisions a unified India. He expressed optimism that this vision would become a reality within the lifetime of the current young generation. Bhagwat suggested that some nations that separated from India in 1947 now regret their decision and aspire to reunite with India.
Responding to a question about flag-hoisting at RSS headquarters in Nagpur, Bhagwat clarified, “Every year on August 15 and January 26, we hoist the national flag, wherever we are. There is flag-hoisting at both our campuses in Mahal and Reshimbagh in Nagpur.” He urged people not to question the organisation’s commitment to displaying the national flag on these important occasions.
Conclusion
Mohan Bhagwat’s remarks underscore the RSS’s dedication to addressing social disparities through reservation policies and its hope for a united India, while also dispelling any misconceptions about the organisation’s observance of national flag-hoisting ceremonies.
